WHAT IS AN COLLEGE ESSAY?
When you are writing your college essays, they are the only things in your application that you can still work on. That is the reason that most high school students regard college essays important for their application. That's a wrong reason to a right conclusion.
The essays are very, if not most, important because that is the primary source of sensations when the admission officers are reading your application. Your stats can only build the stereotype that you fit in, ranging from an achiever with high potentials to a diversifier of strong drives. At this moment, you want the sensations to work for you, knowing there are always more than enough candidates in every stereotypes you fall in.

Heard of tri-value of college admission? It is the value system of Harvard admission since the late 1990s. When Harvard initially put these things up on the admission page, other colleges followed suit. This was in 2005. Creativity, leadership, and altruism have since dominated the college applications. We all read a great deal of them -- still, most of them missed the points.
Creativity doesn't mean to draw a creative painting, or wrote a fantastic song, although that kind of activities are creative. Colleges seeks your creativity in the qualities such as novelty in seeing anything new and audacity in trying anything new. And, how did it make you grow?

Leadership, the mostly touted value in college essays, has also been missed point by thousands of miles. Position of authority means leadership, but a bad one. The good leadership must demonstrate your ability to look beyond and to pass it around. Again, how did it make you grow?
Finally the altruism. Many of you went to helping Kenyans and Nepalis to fight against hunger, poverty, or cancer. It is about what and how you did. But you can't do it for the sake of doing it. It must also be about what they received, how they benefited from it, and whether you've created a lasting effect. Still, it has to contribute to your growth.
HOW SHALL YOU WRITE YOUR ESSAY?
Writing an application essay is writing a short screen play of your study, life, and growth. Knowing the tri-value of college admissions (creativity, leadership, and altruism) is merely a starter's kit. Being able to compose figurative language is the next stepping stone. You also need, and are most likely missing, the following skills in writing narrative essays:
1) Differentiating yourself is the key to interest your readers. What is your unique value and how it fits into the college you are applying. Beside the trio-values, new values such as change, mission, and liberalism are emerging.
2) Plotting your story is another skill to take the breath of your readers. While most students think of their essay stories chronically, you must know what elements go first, next, and last, and how to connect them into a story.
3) Wording your message is a skill to affect your reader in subconscious. You must know that English is a sound-ful language that every sound intrigues an instinct. Use the words of sounds but not ones of syntax.
